A diet that is written only to be followed for a short time is called categorized as one of the fad diets.  Fad diets are also diets that quickly become wildly popular, last for a short time, then become a footnote in popular culture. The Hollywood diet, the Atkins diet, and Jenny Craig are just three examples. Check out the Every Other Day Diet review and Cheat Your Way Thin review. They have been proven to work quite effectively for fat loss and they both talk about lifestyle diet rather than simple fad. Are they telling the truth or are they FAD as well?

Another name for these fad diets are food faddism. This refers to any form of food that becomes popular for a short period of time. These all have two things in common:

-    The food, or some ingredient within it, is thought to have amazing powers.
-    Other foods are removed from the diet because they have negative properties that should be avoided.

As an example of these elements of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. In this diet carbohydrates are the Keystone element that is negative and therefore to be avoided. At the same time, carbohydrates are the miraculous element — actually the lack of carbohydrates because it creates a metabolic state in which the body burns fat at an amazing pace.  This diet had a number of short periods of extreme carbohydrate avoidance, followed by long periods of sustainable low carbohydrate eating. But Dr. Atkins did intend that people could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

As with many have diets, Atkins popularity was extreme and short-lived. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it .  Entertainment magazines were full of movie stars and music stars and sports stars who claimed amazing weight loss and fitness all due to the Atkins diet. Although still around today, the diet is far from as popular as it was at its height.

Fad diets can be unhealthy.  Even a seemingly healthy diet like the Subway diet could be dangerous. It was based on the legend of Jared, a young man who’d lost nearly 250 pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches, baked chips, and diet soda. But Jared had made a radical shift in his caloric habits.  That could have killed him. Even so, the Subway diet when followed in moderation can work.  Particularly because the diet included exercise — Jared walked 6 miles a day while losing the weight. Let’s talk about workouts. The newly released Warp Speed Fat Loss program claims to melt MORE than 2lbs of fat per week. Would one call it a Fad WORKOUT?

Be careful when taking on some of these fad diets. A long-term eating strategy combined with moderate exercise is usually the better bet.
